"Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all." -Stanley Kubrick

We have all had to make some adjustments to our lives and livelihoods in the era of social distance. People have been forced to adapt to using video to communicate remotely. As you may have seen, there have been varying degrees of success. Part of the struggle of digital video is that we have become so accustomed to seeing one another's talking heads on screen that we have neglected the art of videography. This course will be a first step in understanding composition, light, and the beautiful possibilities of videography.

CLASS DATES & AGE RANGE:

February 1 - March 26 for students grades 7-12.  Class will meet weekly on Wednesdays via GoogleMeet from 4pm to 5pm.

CLASS OBJECTIVES:

We will learn the creative process by:

  • exploring the digital and creative tools at our disposal
  • examining great works of photography, cinematography and videography to inform our understanding of technique
  • going forth into the world and recording video

These tasks will all culminate in the course project: you will each create a digital gallery of moving images.

CLASS EXPERIENCE:

Creativity is about problem solving, and we as humans have lots of problems to solve. We are fortunate to have a great many tools at our disposal, but no technology is as powerful as the collaborative creative process. Our course will be a combination of self directed research and collaborative workshop. Weekly lecture notes will be released each Monday morning. They will include links to video materials, software downloads, and tutorials, as well as prompts for videography experiments. During our weekly meetings, we will discuss the week's material, and view one another's videos. Ultimately our goal is to create a collaborative environment in which you are spending the bulk of your time out shooting video rather than sitting in front of your computer. We will not focus on editing or effects so much as the pure practice of moving photos. Expect to spend between 10 hours per week to complete all course materials and finish your project.
